Gianni Matheja (born 14 March 2005) is a German influencer, presenter and student.
Life
Matheja was born in Berlin as the only child of a single mother. His father, originally from Italy, left the family when he was ten years old.[1] At the age of 14, he testified against his father in court.[2] From 2017 onwards, he attended the Lilienthal-Gymnasium in the affluent district Steglitz-Zehlendorf. In his first school year, he participated in Berlin's youth debating contest, where he won the title of "Best Speaker" in an English debate.[3] In 2021, before the German federal election, he hosted a panel discussion with the direct candidates of his electoral district, which included Thomas Heilmann, Ruppert Stüwe, Nina Stahr, and far-right AfD politician Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, who was later arrested for her alleged involvement in the 2022 German coup d'état plot as a part of the Reichsbürger movement.[4] In 2023, he completed his high school diploma.
Career
At 17, Matheja launched the podcast Social Germany on Spotify. The first episode was released in June 2022. Each episode addressed a socio-political topic, featuring both a celebrity guest and a scientific or journalistic expert. Among those featured in the show were activist Raúl Krauthausen, television presenter Vera Int-Veen, politician Sarah-Lee Heinrich and actress Katja Riemann. In the same year, Matheja was featured on the list of upcoming celebrities in the German newspaper Die Zeit.[5]
In 2024, he hosted readings with Katja Riemann, and conducted interviews with renowned journalist Marcus Bensmann, as well as Marcel Fratzscher, economist and president of the German Institute for economic research.[6] Matheja later stated he was offered several traineeships during this period, but declined them.[7] In October, he began studying at the Free University of Berlin. Under the name gianni.studiert, he started posting satirical videos about university life online. Within a few months, he reached 250,000 followers. In 2025, he appeared on the ARD satire show Extra 3, and delivered a speech at his university’s open day, which was traditionally held by president Günter Ziegler in previous years.[8] Since June, he has occasionally hosted the rbb radio program Blue Moon.[9]
Matheja has not publicly disclosed his field of study. In an interview, he cited his desire for anonymity on campus.[7]
