Gilas Pilipinas is the sporting program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) for the national men's and women's basketball teams of the Philippines since May 2019.[1] Gilas is a Tagalog word that loosely translates as "prowess".

History[edit]

Gilas Pilipinas was originally established in 2009 as the sporting program for the men's national basketball team, succeeding the Team Pilipinas program (2005-2009) which was an initiative of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation (2005-2007, known as San Miguel-Team Pilipinas) and Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. (2009, known as Powerade-Team Pilipinas).

The program was first known as Smart Gilas[2] from 2009 to 2012 and renamed Gilas Pilipinas in 2012.

In May 2019, the SBP announced that the Gilas Pilipinas name would be used across all its sporting programs for the men's, men's youth (men's under-19 and men's under-17), men's 3x3 and women's teams.[3]

The all-amateur men's team was previously known as the Gilas Cadets (originally named Sinag Pilipinas from 2011 to 2014 (sinag is the Tagalog word for "ray")), while the women's team was previously known as Perlas Pilipinas (perlas is the Tagalog word for "pearl").
