Giorgi Malashkhia (Georgian: แแแแ แแ แแแแแจแฎแแ, translit.: giorgi malashkhia; born 18 March 1934) is a Georgian scientist, economist, philosopher, sociologist, publicist, and poet.
Biography
Born on 18 March 1934 in the village of Nakipu (Georgia). In 1957, he graduated from the Department of Economics of the Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University. From 1957 to 1961, he worked in the Economic Service in the resort of Tskhaltubo. From 1961 to 1964, he studied at the Graduate School of the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia.
In 1966, he defended his PhD thesis. In 1997, he received the academic degree of Doctor of Economics. In 1998, he was awarded the title of Professor. From 1964 to 2006, Malashkhia worked at a leading economic research institute in various positionsโjunior researcher, senior researcher, research fellow, head of section, head of department, and chief scientific fellow. From 1996 to 2009, he served as a professor at Sukhumi State University. Since 2009, Malashkhia has worked as a professor at the Georgian Technical University. He also taught at several Georgian higher education institutions, including the Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University.
Scientific work
Giorgi Malashkhia is the author of approximately 300 scientific studies published in Georgian, Russian, English, and other languages, including 16 monographs and 2 textbooks. As a member of the organizing committee, he has been involved in organizing numerous scientific forums both locally and abroad. He has participated in numerous scientific forums and served as a member of the editorial boards of scientific journals. Under his supervision and guidance, more than 30 PhD candidates and doctors of sciences and dozens of master's degree theses were prepared. Malashkhia also provided consultancy services on economic issues to governmental institutions.
The main areas of Malashkhia's scientific research are: fundamental theoretical economics and socio-philosophical issues, economic and development analysis/forecasting, humanization of economic and social life, and prerequisites for the transition to a new type of society. His research in the early 1990s and the 1995 monograph โMetaeconomics โ Philosophy of Economicsโ laid the groundwork for developing a new direction of economic theoryโMeteconomics. 1. Contrary to Marxist, classical, and neoclassical theories, he substantiated the formation of profit exceeding the cost of production from sources of free social energy (production potential). This includes natural and man-made unpaid resourcesโenergy sources, climatic phenomena, soil fertility, minerals, as well as human talent, knowledge, experience, scientific discoveries, inventions, and so on, transferred from previous generations. 2.
Malashkhia proved that the growth of wealth outpaces the growth of current production due to the durability of accumulated capital goods. He argued that the productive force of a developed society being higher than the consumer force contributes to increased wealth accumulation. He explained the appropriateness of assessing economic growth by the dynamics of the volume of social wealth instead of GDP. 3. He proved the law of fair distribution of benefits in accordance with personal labor contribution and the altruistic principle for the disabled. He offered a unique explanation of the nature and causes of unfair and excessive inequality in the distribution of created wealth in society. He also demonstrated how a significant portion of the profit received by capital owners, returned to society in the form of investments, charity, etc., becomes social in nature. He substantiated several objective economic laws: the sociogenetic lawโcontinuation of development from the attained stage; maintaining the attained level of development during economic decline; and necessary conditions for multiplying social wealth and economic development related to exceeding the term of use of capital (long-term) goods over the term of production. 4. He confirmed the law of equivalent exchange, i.e., the parity of value and use value of goods in exchange, as a necessary condition for the homeostatic functioning of the economy. He confirmed the quantitative limitations of consumer power and reasonable human needs; the existence of an idle economyโexcessive consumption and accumulation of wealth with no real benefit. He formulated the concept of transforming economic benefits into social ones. He outlined the concept of moderating consumption and accumulation, which determines rational consumer behavior, general well-being, and a high culture of consumption. He introduced new elements in the classification of people's needs, including social and spiritual needs. He presented a new interpretation of the essence of taxes and their nature.
He discussed the drawbacks of capitalism and socialism, the process of global historical metamorphoses, and the transition to a new society (different from capitalism and socialism) in a novel way. He refuted the core idea of historical materialism concerning the decisive role of economics in public life. He emphasized the initial value of the human factor, ideas, consciousness, and their development in the historical process. 5. He showed the tendency of radical changes in the megastructure of societal wealth, particularly the ratio of intangible (spiritual, social) and material components, where the share of material and energy intensity, cost, physical volume, and weight of wealth is relatively reduced.
Malashkhia argues that radical changes are anticipated in societal developmentโa transition from the current egoistic stage to an altruistic one will occur, which will be a prerequisite for the formation of a truly fair, ethical, and humane society. He argues that the rationale for this development vector is that it benefits all. In his works, he uses innovative research methods: anthropocentric consideration of social and economic phenomena (interpreting them from the viewpoint of human abilities and needs); axiometric (value-based) interpretation of benefits; the eudemonic view (explaining life phenomena in light of human happiness); and the genetic approach (analyzing the development process, taking into account the previously attained level of development). He introduced a number of new concepts into economic theory: "social energy," "gratis social energy," "gratis product," "added product," "idle economy," "principle of moderation," "transformation of economic benefits into social," and others.
Malashkhia is also the author of newspaper articles and collections of poems.
