Early Life

Gio was first introduced to music in churches across New York, where he played the electric organ for money.[2][3] He spent the majority of his childhood and adult life in Brooklyn, learning English as a second language in a New York school and hearing lots of hip-hop and house music in the surrounding area which would influence his own music and develop a strong self identity with the location. [4][1][5] At the age of 15 he would begin searching for new music on YouTube, and would go down rabbit holes discovering new music he did not have access to.[1]

He earned a Journalism / Design Major from New York's The New School, where he graduated in 2017.[1][5] In 2015, he began writing articles for his school and other publications as well as studying music more in depth during his time there.[6] [7]

Career

During his school life he would grow his appreciation for rock and jazz which would ultimately lead to him forming a band he would then develop into a guitar based live group in 2014 called Children of the Corner. He would continue to meet future collaborators such as Caleb Giles and Jasper Marsalis (Slauson Malone) at parties as well as develop new relationships with other music and social influences through mutual friends during this time.[8]

For the next two years Gio would record and develop several tape machine-recorded songs which he brought to Slauson Malone who would assist in executively producing the songs into their first self-titled album, under the new alias Standing on the Corner.[4][9][10]

In 2017 he held a Nuyorican film festival at The New School titled, "On The Welfare Line With My Grandma" where he played several Nuyorcian films that he felt were underepresented and important to archive and document how Puerto Ricans were displayed on film at the time.[11][12] Alongside the event he posted several interviews conducted with various film makers such as Carlos De Jesus; whom he ended up working with in 2020 on music video for G-E-T-O-U-T!! The Ghetto.[13][14] In 2018 he brought back the festival at the Arbons Arts Center where he would also play new music with Standing on the Corner with an improvisational live score entitled, "Underwater Blues / Blues Tropical.[15][16] The festival was reprised once again in October 2021 in collaboration with the Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival where Gio would also play a DJ set.[17]

After the success of Standing on the Corner's first two albums, Gio worked closely with artists such as Earl Sweatshirt and Solange; of which he would feature, mix as well as produce music for both.[18][19] Gio would join Earl on the second season of his Red Bull Radio Show, standing in for knxwledge and playing the last 9 episodes.[20][21]

In 2018 he directed a film entitled, THE SWEET ATMOSPHERE PHASED AT 120º AND WENT BLANK! WHEN THE UNIVERSE COLLAPSED , which was a trippy, flash-animated journey into the collective unconscious of the African diaspora.[22]
