Giridhar Aramane is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, belonging to the 1988 batch. Aramane is an Indian bureaucrat and the current Defence Secretary of India. He assumed the position on November 1st, 2022.
Aramane is a well-respected bureaucrat with a wealth of experience in both central and state governments. He has held important positions in various departments and has been involved in policy formulation in critical areas such as petroleum and insurance. As the new Defence Secretary, Aramane is expected to continue his tradition of excellence and contribute to India's national security efforts.

Career

Aramane has had a distinguished 32-year career in the IAS and has held several important positions in the central government as well as the Andhra Pradesh government. He began his career in the Indian bureaucracy in 1988 and has since then held a variety of roles. Prior to his appointment as the Defence Secretary, Aramane was serving as the secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Aramane has served as an additional secretary in the cabinet secretariat and has looked after the exploration division in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He was also an executive director in charge of inspections at the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA).
In addition to these roles, Aramane has also served as the principal secretary in the Urban Development Department and Managing Director of AP State Finance Corporation and Secretary (Finance Department) in the Andhra Pradesh government. He has also held the positions of the collector and district magistrate of Chittoor and Khammam districts.

Education

Aramane did a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad and an M.Tech from IIT, Madras. He is an MA (Economics) from Kakatiya University, Warangal.
