Girl Skin (stylized GIRL SKIN) is an American indie rock and folk rock band from Brooklyn, New York.

History

The band was formed in 2017 by singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Sid Simons, who was soon joined by Bailey Blue (percussions, vocals) and Sophie Cozine (background vocals). Later that year, Ruby Wang (violin) joined the band, as well as Al Nardo (bass). In summer 2018, Sid’s younger brother, actor [1][better source needed] and bassist Stanley Simons joined the band and eventually took over for Al Nardo. Early 2019 saw the band change its formation by adding Wyatt Mones on electric guitar and replacing Bailey Blue with Noah Boling on drums. In October 2019, they signed with indie label Jullian Records[2] and released their debut album Shade is on the other side on April 17, 2020.

Girl Skin has played an official South by Southwest showcase in 2018[3] and 2019[4][5] where they got the attention of NPR’s All Songs Considered and had its co-host Robyn Hilton state: “I really, really loved all of the songwriting.”[6]

Girl Skin has opened for the likes of Alison Sudol at Rough Trade New York or Michael C. Hall’s band Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum at Jesse Malin’s music venue Berlin Under A.

Critical reception

Girl Skin's debut album Shade is on the other side received favorable reviews from American Songwriter, Paste, Atwood Magazine, and NPR's NPR New Music Friday.

Girl Skin was featured in American Songwriter saying "‘Forever & Always’ scratches the same sincere itch of violin-clad alt-rock that early Arcade Fire perfected."[7] Paste said about the album: "It’s hard to get a classic rock-indebted sound just right. At best, you risk cheesiness or, at worst, you risk being called a rip-off, but Girl Skin largely swerve these obstacles and hit the sweet spot—by first and foremost, tapping into the heart."[8] Atwood Magazine stated: "It’s the kind of album that transports you out of the everyday, bringing its audience on a journey through lush pastures and green meadows where tranquility ripples through the air in serene waves of connection, familiarity, and camaraderie."[9]
