Uchinaga Eri (Japanese: 内永 枝利うちなが えり; born October 30, 2000), also known by her stage name Giselle (Korean: 지젤), is a Japanese-Korean member of the South Korean girl group Aespa.

Early life

Giselle was born in Garosu-gil, Seoul, South Korea to a Japanese father and a Korean mother. She attended Tokyo International School and learned to speak fluent English while living there, and formed part of a choir at the school.[1]

Career

Pre-debut

Giselle had the shortest training period for a female SM trainee in their history, with just over 10 months of training.[2]

Debut

She was revealed as the fourth and last member of aespa on October 29, 2020, and introduced as "the rookie of solid rap skills" through SM's official social media.[3] She officially debuted with Aespa on November 17, 2020, with the release of the digital single Black Mamba.

On December 18, 2021, she collaborated with NCT's members Taeyong, Jeno, Hendery and Yangyang in the song "Zoo," which forms part of the 2021 Winter SM Town: SMCU Express album, and participated as a lyricist.[4] The song peaked at number #130 on the Circle Download Chart[5], #38 on the NZ Top 40 Singles Chart, and number #15 on Singapore's RIAS Regional Single Charts.[6] [7]

Public image and influence

In the Korean Business Research Institute's monthly "Individual Girl Group Members Brand Power Ranking," Giselle placed number 5th twice, in the June and October issues, and number twelfth in the July issue of 2021.[8] [9][10]

Philanthropy

On June 3, 2022, Giselle anonymously donated 10M won to an abandoned animal shelter and expressed her concern for the issue to the organization's managers, saying it was the perfect opportunity to send a large amount of donations.[11]

Controversies

On October 23, 2021, a clip of Giselle mouthing a racial slur surfaced on the internet and gathered negative reaction from the public. Later, on October 25, Giselle took to aespa's official Twitter account to apologize for her behavior, explaining that "she got carried away when one of her favorite songs was playing and that she did not intend to do it for any purpose," and later added in a follow-up tweet that she would continue to learn and be more conscious of her actions in the future.[12]
