Global Gene Corp is a genomics company that specialises in collecting data from under-explored patient populations, with a current focus on gathering genetic information of people of Indian descent.[1] The company analyses patients’ DNA in order to find individualized treatment, both as a service for individuals and to collect aggregate data for researchers. Currently based in the UK, the company was founded in 2013 by Dr. Saumya Jamuar, Harvard Medical School geneticist Dr. Jonathan Picker, and current CEO Sumit Jamuar.[2][3][4][5]
History[edit]
The company was founded in 2013 and was the brain-child of two Harvard Medical School doctors who joined forces with two business executives.[2] According to co-founder Jamuar, the idea for the business came about when the group realized that 60% of the world’s population made up less than 1% of the genetic data that had been collected in the mapping of the human genome, as most of the genetic mapping had been done on people of European descent.[4]
The company began with a focus on mapping the genome of people of Indian descent, whose DNA as of 2017 made up only approximately 0.2% of the global genetic databases, despite the nation of India making up 20% of the world’s population. The company has plans to expand its research to Africa and other parts of Asia in the future.[6]
By July of 2016, the company had gathered more than 10,000 DNA samples.[2]
In February 2017, the announced that Dr Yaron Turpaz, former CIO of Human Longevity Inc, had joined the company as Chief Data and Technology Officer.[7][8]
In November 2017 the company announced its collaboration with the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in order to research rare cancers in South Asian and Indian populations.[1]
Similar Projects[edit]
Similar projects to expand genetic mapping of different ethnic groups including Professor Carlos Bustamante’s Population Genomics and Global Health team, which focuses on mapping the genes of people from Latin America and the Carribean. The country of South Korea also has a similar project.[6]
