Gloria Davies animal activist

Gloria Davies is an American animal welfare activist. She is a co-founder and chief executive of Network for Animals (NFA)[1], and its sister organization Political Animal Lobby (PAL). NFA is a campaign-directed animal welfare organization that provides practical assistance to animals[2], while PAL focuses on political action for animals, recognizing that often a fundamental improvement in the treatment of animals must involve political change.[3] Davies runs NFA and PAL with her husband Brian Davies, who is known for his historic campaign to save the seals in the 1970s, which ultimately led to the ban on killing baby whitecoat seals in Canada. In 1985 Gloria accompanied Brian to witness the Magdalen Islands landsman hunt of seals.[4]

Early life[edit]

Davies was born in Brooklyn, New York, in the United States. While working as a volunteer at The Cousteau Society - a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection of ocean life in New York City[5] – Davies met Brian six months later, Gloria left the Society and joined Brian in his life’s mission to help animals. The couple married on January 2, 1981. Together they formed PAL and later NFA, and have been working side-by-side on animal welfare campaigns since, missioning for the rights of animals across the globe.[6]

Charity Work[edit]

Davies was appointed chief executive of NFA in 2010. The organization is active in Croatia, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritius, Montenegro, the Philippines, South Africa, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, the USA, and Zimbabwe. In 2017, Davies became chief executive of PAL. Through PAL, Davies lobbies public representatives and governments to improve legislation that affects animal welfare. She works to ensure that governments are informed about animal welfare issues, that legislation is enforced, and that all forms of media are alert to abuse and cruelty.[7]

Campaigns[edit]

Through NFA and PAL, Davies runs several animal campaigns and advocacy projects in at least 16 countries around the world. In South Africa, she campaigns against rhinoceros poaching and elephant culling. In Greece, she works to help dogs abandoned because of that country's present economic woes. In Zimbabwe, Davies has initiated campaigns to assist MARES, a donkey sanctuary in Bulawayo that combats cruelty and rescues donkeys.[8] [9]

Disaster Assistance[edit]

Davies assist animals and their owners in times of natural disaster, providing on-the-ground help to affected countries, funding for specialized food, and veterinary care for animals left to stranded and those in danger areas. She also helps rescue, care, and reunite displaced animals with their families.[10]

Illegal Dog Meat Trade In The Philippines[edit]

For more than two decades, Davies has been a driving force in the fight against the illegal dog meat trade in the Philippines. She continues to lobby for intensified and faster action by the government agencies charged with enforcing health regulations and the law.[11]

Covid-19 2020[edit]

On 27 March 2020, Davies took action to overturn a ruling by the government of South Africa that only emergency veterinary surgeries could take place due to strictly regulated rules enforced during the coronavirus pandemic. Fallen Angels in the Western Cape was one of several shelter-and-outreach organizations affected by the ruling.[12] Their shelter cares for over 300 dogs, whilst also providing valuable care for thousands of strays living in townships in and around the province.[13] With authorities estimating there could be more than 230 000 street dogs in Cape Town[14] alone PAL advocated that a full spectrum of animal care was needed. Through NFA and PAL, Davies challenged the ruling and the ban was lifted.[15]
