History[edit]
In 2013, Genlin (Peng Hongling) visited his ancestral hometown in Guizhou, China, and discovered a huge banner advertising “Huajiang Dog Meat” on a three-story building. He decided to quit retirement and establish the World Dog Alliance to promote legislation banning the eating of dog and cat meat worldwide.[8]
On 12 December 2014, Genlin held the founding ceremony of the World Dog Alliance in the University of Hong Kong.[9]
In 2016, the World Dog Alliance gathered 100,000 British people's signatures on the online petition website established by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, urging the British government to call on the International Olympic Committee and the Government of South Korea to examine the dog meat industry in South Korea. As a result, the Parliament of the United Kingdom pressed South Korea to act against the dog meat trade.[10]
In April 2017, the Legislative Yuan of Taiwan passed an amendment to the Animal Protection Law banning the eating of dog and cat meat.[11] The World Dog Alliance established the Animal Guardians as the law enforcement agency.[12]
In February 2018, the World Dog Alliance launched the "White House Petition" aiming to receive over 100,000 signatures in a month as the foundation to urge the United States Congress for a bill to outlaw dog and cat meat consumption. In December 2018, the Congress passed the 2018 United States farm bill, which included the Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2018.[13] in 2019, the World Dog Alliance launched a global petition on Care2 aiming to collect 1 million signatures.[14] The petition requested the governments of the United Kindom and the United States to initiate the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats.
In 2019, he established Asia Animal-friendly Alliance with Wang Yumin, a member Legislative Yuan of Taiwan, and Kusuo Oshima, a member of House of Councillors (Japan).[15][16]
In February 2020, U.S. Representatives Alcee Hastings and Rodney Davis united 28 other lawmakers to sign on a letter to President Donald Trump, urging him to lead the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats.[17]
In March 2020, 67 supra-partisan UK Members of Parliament to co-sign a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, urging the governments to initiate the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats.[18]
On 1 May 2020, Shenzhen became the first city in China to outlaw the eating of dog and cat meat,[19]
On 4 December 2020, Hidehisa Otsuji, chairman of the Japanese Parliamentary League for Animal Welfare, led 10 other members to submit a letter requesting Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide to jointly initiate the International Agreement to Prohibit the Eating of Dogs and Cats with the United States.[20]
Activities[edit]
926 Dog Lovers' Day[edit]
In 2015, the World Dog Alliance celebrated September 26 as the 926 Dog Lovers' Day. The name “926 Dog Lovers’ Day” finds its roots in the Cantonese language, in which the pronunciation of nine-two-six. is similar to “gau yi luk”, which means “dogs are always ready to please”. The first 926 Dog Lovers' Day was simultaneously celebrated in Hong Kong, the United States, and Italy by screening the documentary produced by the World Dog Alliance titled "Eating Happiness".[6]
Golden Dog Award[edit]
In 2016, the World Dog Alliance invented the Golden Dog Award to commend animal activists with outstanding contributions. The first 10 awardees included Raye (director of the documentary Twelve Nights) and Wang Taishan (Chief Executive of the Taiwan Cat and Dog Association).[7]
