Gloss started out as an online media outlet that provided blogs and information services for current news and trends,[4] landing major interviews with celebrities like Vogue and Naomi Watts.[5] It grew in popularity to the point where it was sought after by investors and venture capitalists to help it scale.[6] The company has since raised several millions of dollars in funding.[7][8]
The company now focuses on the creation and curation of original arts and media content.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Its site averages 411,726 unique visitors a day[when?] and 2.5 billion views a month.[17] Alexa ranked the site 235th in site traffic in the United States and 992nd for worldwide traffic.[18][19]
Gloss was given the exclusive coverage of the Banksy Love is in the Bin story in 2018.[20] This was one of the biggest art stories of the year, and started when one of Banksy's works, Balloon Girl, was sold in an auction at Sotheby's in London for £1.04m. However, shortly after the gavel dropped and it was sold, an alarm sounded inside of the picture frame and the canvas passed through a shredder hidden within the frame, partially shredding the picture.[21] Banksy then posted an image of the shredding on Instagram captioned "Going, going, gone...".[22] After the sale, the auction house acknowledged that the self-destruction of the work was a prank by the artist.[23]
