The Golden Biatec Award recognizes exceptional contribution to economic, public, and political life in the Slovak Republic. The prize is awarded annually by Slovakia’s "Informal Economic Forum - Economic Club", usually to seven recipients who are leaders in their country. The Economic Club awards the prizes to foreign persons for their contribution to “peace and development in relations between the nations and their states.”[1]
Since its foundation in 1993, the Golden Biatec Award is the highest honour awarded by the members of the Association for economic, social, scientific, educational and cultural accomplishments in the Slovak Republic. The award is also given for exemplary performance and actions to achieve peace and progress among nations and countries.[2]
The award is presented in Bratislava on the basis of non-public, secret elections from a pool of nominees,[3] and was first given in August 1993, eight months after Slovakia’s recognition as an independent state.[4]
The first laureate of the prize was Michal Kováč, the first President of the Slovak Republic.[5]
The Informal Economic Forum Economic Club was founded in the country’s capital, Bratislava, on August 19, 1993 at the initiative of Dr. Petra Kasalovský, former editor-in-chief of the Slovak edition of the business daily Hospodarske Noviny.[6]
Past international Laureates of the Golden Biatec Award include former Governor of Texas and former U.S. President George W. Bush (1999), Russian President Vladimir Putin (2001), and 1996 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus (2009).[7][8]
