Gone Sugar Die is a musical collective created by Mike Hindert of The Bravery and Canadian songwriter Patrick McWilliams.[1] McWilliams met Hindert via e-mail after attempting to be a part of his record label, Merrifield Records.[2] The group also features drummer Anthony Burulcich of The Bravery[3], as well as producer/guitarist Marshall Gallagher, of Teenage Wrist and 3OH!3.[4] Their sound has been described as synth-punk, cheeky and "dirt-pop"[5]; a homage to Hindert's nickname "Dirt". [2]
In October 2018, the group released a cover of Days Go By, which was recognized by online press[6] and Dirty Vegas themselves.[7]
In May 2019, Gone Sugar Die was announced to take part in Canadian Music Week[8], performing with The Death Set[9] and King Khan (musician).[10][11] As part of their set, the band covered Deadmau5 single ”I Remember”[12], as well as the Ramones song "I Wanna Be Sedated".[11]
For the release of their first original single, Heartbreak Jewelry, the band signed with ONErpm[13] and Rough Trade off-shoot, Revolver.[14] The song and music video, animated by Hindert, premiered June 14, 2019 on Earmilk. It was also announced the single would be followed by an EP titled "Blaack Heaart".[15]
In June 2019, “Heartbreak Jewelry” was featured on Eric Alper’s “Best Indie Music” playlist.[16]
The follow-up single, Candy Is A Heartthrob, was released on August 9, 2019. The song premiered on Rebel Noise, alongside a video directed by McWilliams showcasing the notorious Homelessness in Vancouver and the Opioid epidemic in the United States.[17]
