Good Shepherd Parish or Good Shepherd Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic church under the authority of the Diocese of San Diego. It is located at the intersection of Camino Ruiz and Gold Coast Drive in Mira Mesa, a neighborhood of San Diego, California. It was established on April 24, 1970 by Bishop Leo T. Maher, who designated Father William A. Kraft as the church's founding pastor.[1] The parish serves the surrounding communities of Mira Mesa, Sorrento Valley, and Miramar.
History[edit]
Good Shepherd Parish was founded amidst a period of increasing development in the Mira Mesa area in the 1970s. The founding of the parish was inaugurated with a Mass on April 24, 1970 in the Rancho Peñasquitos Shopping Center. In the first two years of its founding, parish activities including Mass and catechism classes were held in various sites in the local area until the completion of a multipurpose compound in 1972 at the Parish's present location. This compound now serves as the Parish Hall.[2]
Following the construction of a parish school in 1982, planning for a larger, main church building began in 1988 and was completed and dedicated on November 27, 1988. Funding for the $1.7 million project was provided by various families and a loan provided by the Diocese of San Diego.
Groundbreaking for a parish center occurred on August 19, 2012 and construction of the building was completed in 2013. A dedication ceremony was held by Bishop Cirilo Flores on October 27, 2013.[3] The building contains school administrative offices, meeting rooms, conference rooms, preschool and extended care facilities, and a gymnasium/multipurpose room that seats up to 700 people.[4]
Structure and Layout[edit]
The main church seats approximately 1,100 people. The sanctuary of the church is elevated and features the San Damiano Cross which is flanked by images of Saint Joseph and Mary.[2]
A blessed sacrament chapel, baptismal font, and ambry are located on the western wing of the church. A cry room and nursery are also present on the opposite end of the church.
Parish Activities[edit]
Mass is offered in English daily. Masses in Vietnamese and Spanish are offered on weekends.[5] The church also holds several parish and diocesan activities including:

Good Shepherd Catholic School[edit]
Good Shepherd Catholic School is a TK-8 Catholic private school located on parish grounds and was established in 1982. The school was initially staffed by the Sisters of Mercy from Ireland. At the time of its founding, the school initially offered education for grades 1-3 but expansion projects funded by parish families in 1984 allowed for the expansion to include grades 1-8. The school is accredited through the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA)[7] and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)[8].
