The Govana Libre is a Scottish cocktail based primarily on dark rum. The cocktail was invented in 2009 after a competition was raised by both the City of Glasgow and the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow. Its name is a play on words of the Havana Libre (an alternative name for the Cuba Libre) and Govan, the area where the inventor was born. It is influenced by iconic Cuban cocktails such as the Mojito, Daiquiri as well as the Mexican Margarita. It is produced by bruising a sprig of fresh lime into sugar cane syrup before adding ice into a cocktail shaker. Dark rum, and fresh lime juice are then added before the ingredients are shaken together. The ingredients are then strained into a cocktail glass over crushed ice. The drink is topped up with a dash of lemonade and a dash of grenadine and a lime garnish is added before serving. The drink was invented by the Govan born Chris Pendergast during the summer months of 2009. The drink was developed in order to establish an iconic cocktail for both the City of Glasgow and the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
