The Governor Phillip Scholarship awards prestigious postgraduate scholarships to outstanding students who wish to study in the United Kingdom or Australia.[1] The Governor Phillip Scholarships are amongst the most important bilateral postgraduate scholarships currently available in both countries.

History[edit]

The Governor Phillip Scholarship was established in 2016[2] with initial contributions from corporate and private sponsors and donors. The first Governor Phillip Scholarship was awarded in 2017 to an initial scholar. The Patron, the Governor of New South Wales, formally launched the Governor Phillip Scholarship at Government House Sydney on the 18 September 2018.[3] Recipients of the Governor Phillip Scholarships are recognised as Governor Phillip Scholars. All Governor Phillip Scholars selected must be outstanding in their chosen academic field. They demonstrate significant leadership potential and aspire to strengthen the bonds between Australia and the United Kingdom. The Trust is named after and celebrates the outstanding qualities of Admiral Arthur Phillip RN, Commander of the First Fleet and first Governor of modern Australia. Established in his memory, the Governor Phillip Scholarship acknowledges the achievements of the man, the statesman, the naval officer and the humanitarian.

The mission of the Governor Phillip Scholarship is "to invest in outstanding young Australian and British men and women from all fields of endeavour to create an inspirational generation of leaders, academics, and global citizens for the benefit of Australia and the United Kingdom".[4]

Criteria and selection process[edit]

Governor Phillip Scholarships are open to outstanding Australians and Britons with demonstrated ability in their chosen academic field, leadership potential and an aspiration to strengthen the bonds between Australia and the United Kingdom. The Scholarship is publicised at Australian and British universities to highlight the opportunity it offers for recipients to undertake postgraduate studies.

As of 2019, overseas degrees that were under way and funded by the Governor Phillip Scholarship included 4 Masters degrees.[5]

Criteria[edit]

In awarding the Governor Phillip Scholarships, factors considered include:

  • Australian or United Kingdom citizenship;
  • Outstanding intellect – demonstrated by academic excellence (having completed or about to complete a university degree or degrees with outstanding results);
  • Leadership – demonstrated and potential – within or outside of an applicant’s field of study or professional field; Citizenship – community service;
  • Program – a defined research project or study programme to be conducted at a British or Australian university;
  • Proposed career trajectory – a credible and concrete pathway, addressing an issue the applicant is passionate about which is of benefit to Australia and/or the United Kingdom;
  • Referee reports supporting the applicant's profile.

The Governor Phillip Scholarships are not restricted by age or gender.

Selection process[edit]

Scholars apply to the academic department of the university that they wish to commence postgraduate study. Upon successful application, the university in question recommends candidates to the Board of the Governor Phillip Scholarship Trust for endorsement as recipients of the Governor Phillip Scholarships. At present participating universities include the Universities of Oxford and Sydney.

Recipients[edit]

Scholar fields and locations[edit]

International relations and political theory are initially to be the core disciplines of study. In time the Scholarship will expand to include other leading universities and fields of study. Two individuals were announced as Governor Phillip Scholars to commence their studies in 2019, bringing the total number of Governor Phillip Scholars to date to five.[6] Governor Phillip Scholars are currently studying at the University of Oxford. Arrangements are in place for postgraduate study by scholars from the United Kingdom at the University of Sydney.

Academic Focus[edit]

Academic focus is broad, ranging from international relations and government, indigenous affairs, to diplomacy and defence. Consideration is also to be made to scholars seeking to study in other areas, including but not limited to medicine, law and business, education, science, technology and innovation.
