Grace Ihejiamaizu is a Nigerian social entrepreneur, TEDxYouth speaker[1] and educator who created iKapture Centre for Development,[2][3] an after school center for out-of-school youth as well as OpportunityDesk.org,[4] an online platform that connects young people across the world to relevant global opportunities.[5]
Early life and education[edit]
Ihejiamaizu trained as a sociologist and holds a Master's Degree in Rural Sociology and Community Development from the University of Uyo and Bachelor's Degree in Sociology at University of Calabar.[6][7] In 2010 she completed a certificate in civic leadership and engagement from Kansas State University and in 2016 a certificate in social entrepreneurship from the University of Connecticut, USA.[8] She currently works as an assistant lecturer at the University of Calabar from where she also mentors and runs her social ventures.[9][10][8]
Career[edit]
In 2011, Ihejiamaizu launched a project to address the challenge of youth unemployment and idleness in Nigeria.[11] In 2014, she turned it into a social enterprise now known as iKapture Centre for Development to educate, engage and equip out-of-school youth from low-income communities with the skills and competence to become more marketable as future employees or desirous of becoming entrepreneurs.[12] For the past 6 years, iKapture has reached more than 5000 young people, empowering them with knowledge and skills for employment and job creation.[10]
Ihejiamaizu volunteers her time to mentor young people especially women.[13] In 2015, she coached a team of young girls to develop a mobile app to solve a problem in their community. The group, Team Charis, represented Africa at the Technovation World Pitch in San Francisco where they were named global winners. Grace has since become a Technovation Regional Ambassador to get more girls into technology.[14]
She was one of 60 young people from nearly 2,000 applicants to attend the British Council's 2012 Global Changemakers event,[15] and has spoken at several national and international conferences including the World Economic Forum, UNESCO Youth Forum, and OpenCon.[2] Her commitment to the development of youth has won her several awards and recognition. She has been honored as US Department State Alumni member of the month (September, 2012)[16][17] and The Future Awards Africa Young Person of the Year nominee (2013).[18] In 2016, she became a Mandela Washington Fellow of the Young African Leaders Initiative and made the list of 50 "Future Leaders: Young People to watch" in Cross River State during the Cross River at 50 celebration.[19]
