Olu Akanmu is a Nigerian business person who has worked in telecommunication, banking, and the Nigerian fintech ecosystem. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Opay,[1] a fintech company with headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria, until July 2023. Since, he has been a financial inclusion and policy advocate.[2]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Akanmu was born in Nigeria and he attendend Lagelu Grammar School in Ibadan where he obtained his secondary education.[3] He later enrolled at Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly known as University of Ife) where he earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in 1985.[4] Folling that, he obtained an MBA degree from Lagos State University.

He also pursed a management programme at the University of Witwaterstand, Johannesburg, South Africa and Heriot Watt University, United Kingdom.[5][6]

Career[edit]

Akanmu started his career as the Marketing Manager at Glaxo-Nigeria,[7] and later became the Chief Operating Officer at Society for Family Health. He later joined First City Monument Bank where he worked as the Executive Director[8][9] of Retail Banking.[10] Akanmu later received an FCMB's award of excellence in retail banking.[11]

Following a position as Chief Marketing Officer[12] at Airtel Nigeria[13] and at First City Monument Bank[14], he was appointed as the co-chief executive officer[15] of OPay Nigeria[16] Under his watch, Opay recorded impressive growth, especially during the Naira shortage in the country.[17]

Exit from Opay Nigeria[edit]

In July 2023 Olu Akanmu left Opay Nigeria after spending less than 2 years in the firm. His resignation raised concern[18] among those in fintech community. Mr. Akanmu's departure was particularly noteworthy because he had dedicated two years of his career to the fintech startup's growth and development and many in the tech community had associated Mr. Akanmu with Opay's success, and his departure raised questions about the company's future[19] direction and strategies.[20]
