Gracie Barra Montreal

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gracie Barra Montreal is a school of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (a.k.a BJJ) located in Montreal, Quebec.[1] It was founded in January 2010 and is still in the same location.[2] In 2012, the school underwent an expansion and it has now two mat areas in a 5,500 sqft. facility.[3] GB Montreal is one of the few BJJ schools in the province of Quebec that are recognized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF).The classes are based on the Gracie Barra Association structure, which divides students based on levels of expertise: Fundamentals, Advanced and Black Belt. Even though a few professional grapplers and pro-MMA fighters use Gracie Barra Montreal as part of their training camps, the majority of the students have other occupations and take the sport as a hobby. The Gracie Barra Association is a global organization formed by more than 200 BJJ schools. It holds the mission of training body, mind, and spirit through the highest level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction and self-defense. Martial arts are also a mean for individual development and the strengthening of the family spirit, going beyond the competitive realm. At Gracie Barra, the principle of efficiency, the core of BJJ, is not restricted to a general principle behind the practice of self-defense techniques, but serves as a moral beacon that guides the behavior of each Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, instructors, and their students.

Instructors[edit]

The head instructor is Bruno F. Fernandes, a third degree black belt and multiple-time world champion.Fernandes began practicing BJJ at 11 years of age. He started with Carlson Gracie, but switched to GB at 16 as a blue belt and has been with them ever since, because he “loved Gracie Barra immediately.” Master Carlos Gracie, Jr. awarded him his black belt in Rio de Janeiro, after he won the World Championship as a brown belt in 2000.Fernandes is a multiple-time Brazilian National Champion and 4-time World Champion and says, “I grew up doing BJJ. It’s now a part of my life and me. I see BJJ as a lifestyle. I embraced it a long time ago and now it just can’t be changed.” [4] The team of assistant instructors includes BJJ practitioners, MMA fighters and conditioning coaches. A non-exclusive list would include names such as Ivan Menjivar,[5] Olivier Aubin-Mercier,[6] Louis-Philippe Gauthier, Tiago and Bruno Briccoli, Elsa Sery, among others.
