Grand Jury Music

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Grand Jury Music is an American independent record label based in New York City[1]. Founded in 2014 by Craig Winkler and Matthew Johnson, the label was created as part of a joint venture with Oxford, Mississippi based independent record label Fat Possum Records. Grand Jury Music features a roster of mainly indie-rock, indie-pop, and alternative-rock acts with notable current and former signees including the indie-rock bands Hippo Campus, Twin Peaks, and Day Wave. The label is distributed by The Orchard, internationally.

History[edit]

Grand Jury Music was created by music industry veterans Craig Winkler and Matthew Johnson. Winkler began his career in music as a prominent taste maker in the Chicago area. He has since worked with legends like Seymour Stein at Sire Records and iconic record producer Rick Rubin.[2]

Teaming up with Matthew Johnson, in 2014 Winkler created Grand Jury Music, a joint venture endeavor with Oxford, Mississippi based independent record label Fat Possum Records. Robbie Mackey joined as a partner shortly after. Coming from a background working for Sony Music’s The Orchard and Brooklyn based independent record label Mom + Pop, Mackey has been running the label with Winkler ever since.[3]

Upon the label’s inception, Winkler and Mackey signed and welcomed the label’s flagship band, Twin Peaks to its roster. Other initial signees include the ambient-pop band Seoul, indie-pop artist Elliot Moss, and indie-rock bands Mothers, NE-HI, and Day Wave.

In 2015, the label signed St. Paul, Minnesota based indie-rock band Hippo Campus.[4] Grand Jury enjoyed some initial success with the band’s EPs Bashful Creatures and South. Among these first successful releases were also Twin Peaks’ Wild Onion (2014) and Mothers’ When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired (2016).

Recent releases by the label include Jordana’s Classical Notions of Happiness, Elliot Moss’ A Change in Diet, Twin Peaks’ Lookout Low, and Hippo Campus’ Bambi.
