Grant Alexander McCracken (1961–2020) was a New Zealand-born, Australian-Scots poet active in the Melbourne performance poetry scene.
Biography[edit]
McCracken was born in New Zealand in 1961, where he attended Whangārei Boys High School. In the late 1980s McCracken moved to Melbourne. McCracken attended the Victoria College of the Arts, completing a degree in Fine Arts in 1988.
McCracken toured and performed his poetry across Australia and the world at poetry and art festivals including Montsalvat in Melbourne in 1988, the National Poetry Festival in San Francisco in 1989, the Gunnery Show in Sydney in 1990, the 1992 Melbourne Fringe Festival, and the Austin, Texas Poetry Festival in 1993.
During the early 1990s, McCracken ran poetry readings at Lord Byron's Bar in Ballarat, Victoria.
In 1993 McCracken published a collection of his poems and paintings called "The SHAM cabaret".[1]
In 1994 McCracken established the Dan Poetry Readings at the Dan O'Connell Hotel in Carlton, Victoria. The poetry readings still run to this day.
McCracken exhibited his paintings throughout the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.
McCracken was a well-known personality on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, Victoria. From 2004 he was an ambassador for the Rose Street Markets.[2]
Death[edit]
On Friday 10 January 2020 McCracken died at home in Fitzroy North, Melbourne, Australia.[3]
