Great Minds on India is a research-based book written by Salil Gewali, first published in paperback format from Academic Publications in 2009. The second edition of the book was published from Penguin Books in 2013.[1] It is a compilation of the thoughts and ideas of world-renowned scholars. The book has been translated into eleven languages including Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Manipuri, Tamil and Nepali.[2][3]
Background[edit]
Great Minds on India, originally published under the title – What is India?, is authored by Salil Gewali, an Indian researcher, writer and journalist.[2] From early young age Gewali was introduced to the depth of the ancient scriptures by his father. He was inspired by prominent scientists like Fritjof Capra, Carl Sagan, Andrew Tomas and some writers of biographies of Ralph Emerson, Sir William Jones, Henry David Thoreau, Erwin Schrödinger and Robert Oppenheimer whose literary works gave birth to the idea of compiling quotes and opinions of the world-renowned scholars on India. The first edition of the book was published in Xerox format in 1998 and the paperback edition was published in 2009 which was formally launched by the Governor of Meghalaya – Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary.[4][5]

The book is a collection of the thoughts and quotes of world-renowned personalities on cultural heritage and ancient wisdom of India. In this book, Gewali described how the ancient knowledge inspired the thinkers, scientists and writers from the western world.[6]

The first edition of the book was edited by a former NASA scientist – Prof A.V. Murali of Houston, USA[7][8] and prefaced by a NASA Chief scientist – Dr. Kamlesh Lulla of Texas, USA.[8][9] The book was officially launched by the Government of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Meghalaya and Chhattisgarh.[4]
In popular culture[edit]
A short documentary on Great Minds on India was released in June 2018 by a Mumbai-based media house - Manthanhub.[10]
