Greater Romania (political concept)
The concept of Greater Romania[1][2] (Romanian: România Mare) is a Romanian nationalist and irredentist ideology. Its main goal is the creation of a "Greater Romania"[3] which would incorporate all Romanian speakers. It is the guiding principle for reunification of Moldova and Romania.[3] The concept shows similarities to the idea of national state.[2]
According to Livezeanu the creation of Greater Romania with "a unifying concept of nationhood" started to evolve in the late 1910s.[4] Significant groups of Romanians could not become part of the Romanian state and did not participate in the modern nation-building process.[4] These groups became subjects of assimilation in the neighboring countries (Serbia, Hungary or Ukraine) or took part in different nation-state projects (as in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic).[4]
The ideology of National Communism was also connected to this concept.[citation needed]
