Greg Blais (born April 18, 1980) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender.[1]
Professional Life[edit]
Blais played college hockey for Suffolk University in the ECAC Northeast of the NCAA. Greg played four seasons with Suffolk University from 02–06. In 2003 lead the ECAC Northeast in save percentage at 91.9% with a 3.06 G.A.A. In 2005 Greg was named most valuable player for Suffolk University and named third team All-American.
He signed with his first professional team for Heist Op Den Berg in the Belgium Elite League for the 2006–07 season. He then went on to play in the United Kingdom for the Wightlink Raiders to finish the 2006–07 season. He was named player of the month in January, February and March 2007.
For the 2007–08 season Blais signed for H.C Gap in the France 1st division where he ended up with a 2.90 G.A.A and a 91.3 save percentage, and a Division 1 Championship. After a good season in the Alps of France, Greg signed a contract to play for the Bergen Flyers in Norway (division 1) for the 2008–2009 season where he played in 19 games and had a 4.19 G.A.A. and an 88.9 save percentage.
He received an offer to play in the French Magnus League (elite league) in the 2009–2010 season for Morzine-Avoriez Penguins. Greg ended up with 11 games played in the league with four cup games where he posted a 4.86 G.A.A with an 88.9 Save percentage. After a good season in Morzine, Greg has signed a one-year contract to play in Paris for the Meudon Comets in the French 2nd Division.
For the 2010–2011 season he has signed with the Telford Tigers in the British Premier League (EPL) as their import goaltender. With 14 games played with an 88% save percentage. In the summer of 2012 Greg has signed in the British Elite League with the Hull Stingrays for the 2012/13 season and was named Player of the Week for November 2012.
For the 2013–14 season Greg was placed on loan to the Cardiff Devils and signed for the Fife Flyers in 2014–2015 until he played one games for the Peterborough Phantoms where the team won the EPL Championship; this was Greg's final game before retiring from professional ice hockey.
During his final years playing Ice Hockey, Greg Blais worked as a Special Constable for Hampshire Police from 2011 until 2014 and in 2014 joined Surrey Police as a Police Officer.
Personal life[edit]
In 2009 Greg had a lucky escape while playing with Morzine when the sleeper coach carrying the team was involved in a crash on mountain roads. He recalls that while asleep in a bed above the driver, the coach slid on a patch of ice and the bed he was asleep in dislodged and fell on the driver causing the coach to crash off the road. The bed containing Greg was ejected from the coach windscreen and Greg in his bed slid down part of the mountain. Luckily Greg had no lasting injuries.
