Gregg Matte (born c. 1971) is an American evangelical pastor, author, and speaker who currently serves as the senior pastor of Houston's First Baptist Church, a Houston megachurch.[1][2] Born in Louisiana and later moving to Texas, Matte is widely recognized for his leadership of one of the city's most influential congregations. He holds a bachelor's degree in marketing from Texas A&M University and a Master of Arts in Christian Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Early life and career
Matte was born in Louisiana and moved to Texas before attending Texas A&M. Matte began his ministry in 1989 at Texas A&M. In 1989, he and his roommates started a Bible study which eventually grew into Breakaway Ministries.[3] Under his leadership, it became one of the largest collegiate Bible studies in the United States, drawing over 4,000 students weekly. In 2004, Matte transitioned from collegiate ministry to pastorate when he was elected to succeed John Bisagno at Houston's First Baptist, a role he has held for over two decades.[4][5]
Community leadership
Matte was noted for mobilizing the church's resources to enable community support following the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Harvey in Houston in 2017.[6] He led the church through controversy surrounding the embezzlement of $800,000 in Church funds in 2018.[7]
Matte is an author and active leader in higher education. He has authored several books focused on Christian leadership.[8] In addition to his pastoral duties he has served as the chair of the board of trustees for Houston Christian University (formerly Houston Baptist University).[9]
