The Greifswald Lights are an unidentified aerial phenomenon that occurred August 24, 1990, in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern that was seen for more than 30 minutes and filmed and photographed by many independent witnesses. It is one of the best documented cases of such a phenomenon in Europe.[1][2]

On August 24, 1990, around 8:30 p.m. a cluster of luminous spheres were seen by many independent witnesses north-east of Greifswald at the coast of the Baltic Sea. The phenomenon was seen by people from the cities of Greifswald and Rostock and people on the islands of Rügen and Usedom. A team of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) that inversigated the phenomenon received six videos and eleven photographs from different witnesses. Also more than a dozen individuals were interviewed personally by the group.[3]

The position of the lights was more or less stable but the single spheres were moving. This unusuall behavior was in contrast to what is expected by airplanes, balloons, luminous munitions and atmospheric phenomena. The movements of these lights didn't seem to line up with any known objects, as the movennt of the single luminous spheres seemed too quick and too abrupt.[4] There are two different videos of the phenomenon publicly available.[5][6]

There was a report about the phenomenon by the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), a regional public television broadcaster for the city-state of Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein.[7]

MUFON clames that until May 2000 no scientific explanation has been found, even though the degree of strangeness of this penomenon is limited.[8]
