Character biography
Background and training
In the first novel, Red Star Rising, Greta is introduced as an infantry soldier (11B). She enlists in the Minnesota National Guard while attending community college in Duluth. The National Guard is a state-based reserve component of the United States Armed Forces that can be activated for both state and federal missions.[1] As a member of the Guard, Greta trains as an infantrywoman, mastering small arms, maintaining equipment, and learning field manoeuvres. The 11B role requires soldiers to operate mounted and dismounted, close with and destroy the enemy, and collect tactical information.[2]
Flood of Shadows
In the second book, Flood of Shadows, a historic flood strikes Minnesota. Greta is mobilized with more than 500 soldiers to provide flood-fighting assistance. She coordinates search-and-rescue efforts and defends local communities, showcasing the National Guard’s dual state and federal responsibilities. Her leadership during this crisis earns her a Bronze Star in the fictional canon.
Later developments
Subsequent installments depict Greta training with specialized units such as aviation detachments and chemical response teams. The books highlight the variety of missions available to Minnesota National Guard members, including aviation support with UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and domestic operations involving disaster response. Greta eventually accepts a commission and leads a company during a peacekeeping mission in a fictionalized Eastern European conflict.
Creation and reception
Author Mark J. Ellison created Greta Halvorson to provide a female perspective in military fiction, drawing inspiration from real soldiers’ experiences. Critics praised the character’s authenticity and the series’ integration of accurate National Guard details. Military-themed blog Operations & Fiction commended Ellison for depicting the demanding training and diverse missions of 11B infantry soldiers.
