Japanese animation company "Grouper Productions" was established in 1986 by Tsunemasa Hatano, a former production engineer at the former Mushi Productions [1], and Masami Hata, a director from the former Mushi Productions (虫プロダクション) who worked at Madhouse after leaving the same company, after working as staff members of the Sanrio Film Department (サンリオ映画部) and after the dissolution of that department.
The company name was named by the founders, Hatano and Hata, after the English word for the grouper fish.
Before its establishment, the company was mainly involved in animated films featuring Sanrio characters such as "Hello Kitty", "Kerokero Keroppi", and "Kiki and Lala", as well as "Fairy Dick", "Go! Inaka Takkyu Club" and others. [2]
As of December 1995, the company's headquarters was located in a building "Royal Mansion Sangenjaya" ローヤルマンション三軒茶屋 at 2-14-10 Sangenjaya, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo.
The group disbanded around 1996. The director, Masami Hata, worked as a freelancer before returning to work for Madhouse. [3]
