Grove is a location-based social and dating application that facilitates communication between interested users. Users receive one match recommendation per day and are only able to chat after responding to targeted ice breakers.[1]

Users can sign up using Facebook or by their phone number. They are only approved if they fill out a real photo and verify their information is correct by accepting a community guideline agreement. Users who violate the agreement by harassing others or inappropriate behavior can be reported and banned.[2]

    History[edit]

The app is headquartered in San Francisco, California and has 25 employees globally. After a private beta release in the San Francisco Bay Area under the code name "Blue", the app rebranded itself to Grove and released nationwide in the United States in January 2019.

    Operation[edit]

Formerly, Blue users needed to log in via Facebook when signing up. In January 2019, Grove added an option to sign up using only a phone number, following Facebook's involvement in a controversy with Cambridge Analytica. For users who sign up with Facebook, information from their account is used to build a profile with photos and basic information, including the user's college and job.

Users double tap "like" a potential match or select an X option to reject them. Users are recommended to each other based on a compatibility algorithm which prioritizes similar interests and photos showing compatible activities.
