Grupo Signo was a group of artists working in Chile in the 1960s. Founded by José Balmes, Gracia Barrios, Eduardo Martinez Bonati, and Alberto Perez, they rejected both the Post-Impressionist aesthetic and the Geometric abstraction that was prevalent in South America at the time. Instead, they embraced Informalist abstraction, which used more spontaneous gestures to apply paint and other materials in an artwork. Over the decade, their seemingly abstract paintings became associated with the political situation of the time.[1] Their first exhibition opened in October of 1961 at the University of Chile. Subsequently, their work was exhibited in Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, and Cordoba.[2]
