Gunjan Sharma
Gunjan Sharma is an Assamese teenage girl who was chosen for the annual state bravery award for the year 2013.[1]
Brave act[edit]
Gunjan Sharma is a student of class 8. On December 4, 2013 a school van with 11 students was attacked by an armed man at Nazira in Sivasagar District, Assam. When the gunman wanted one of them as hostage, Gunjan Sharma offered herself to be taken as hostage in order to save the lives of the other ten children in the van. She was later rescued by the police near the Assam-Nagaland border.[2]
State award[edit]
The chief minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, announced that the Assam government would institute an annual bravery award to honour brave children of the state.[3] In recognition of her brave act, the government decided to name the award after Gunjan. She will be rewarded on January 1, 2014. An award of Rs. 2 Lakhs has been announced by the government.[4]
