Gurvinder Singh Jammu is a pioneer bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgeon in Jalandhar, Punjab, India. He started the bariatric program in his hospital[citation needed] and faced initially a strong criticism from the medical fraternity but now the city has 10 new emerging bariatric centers owing to the positive results given by Jammu's bariatric work.[citation needed]

Jammu did his graduation and post graduation from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana.[citation needed] He completed his master's degree in general surgery in December 1995.[citation needed] He had special interest in trauma particularly neurosurgery and did his thesis on neurosurgery.[citation needed] Later owing to the upcoming innovations in laparoscopic surgery he became more interested in the more advance and upcoming laparoscopic procedures.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

Jammu started his surgical career in the year 1996 as a consultant laparoscopic surgeon in a multispeciality hospital in Jalandhar, Punjab.[citation needed] He was in limelight in the city due to his laparoscopic skills.[citation needed] Soon he was spotted by one of the biggest hospitals of the city, Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, where he worked, initially as a consultant laparoscopic general surgeon for three years (1997–1999).[citation needed] He became head of department of surgery in 2001.[citation needed]

In 2007, he stepped into bariatric and metabolic surgery. Jammu started his bariatric practice in the year 2007 with gastric bypass mainly Roux en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).[citation needed]

In 2009, he started mini gastric bypass. Due to better results, the main bulk of his bariatric practice is now mini gastric bypass. His comparative study on the three bariatric procedures RYGB, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and mini gastric bypass is published in Obesity Surgery Journal and has an acclaimed wide acceptance amongst the global bariatric surgery community.[citation needed]

His hospital is accredited with highest Indian Quality Program, National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Health care Providers and has earned the distinction of acquiring International Excellence Federation for Bariatric, and Metabolic Surgery status.[citation needed]
