Gyu-seo Lee (Hangul: 이규서; born 28 December 1993) is a Korean conductor based in Vienna and Seoul. He is artistic director and chief conductor of the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul. Korea's prestigious arts magazine Gaeksuk (Hangul: 객석; lit. Auditorium) listed him among Korea's "9 leading conductors" in 2019.[1] He was also named the Artist of the Year by the Committee of Korean Arts Critics in 2018.
Biography
Lee was born in Seoul. He began to study violin at the age of 5 and served a youth orchestra in his town as a concertmaster for nearly a decade.[2] During this time, he developed an interest in conducting and composition. He entered Seoul National University (SNU) and took his Bachelor and Master's degrees in Conducting. After his graduation, he moved to Vienna to study with Simeon Pironkoff, a renowned composer and conducting pedagogue at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW). While a student in Vienna, he was also chosen as the recipient of a conducting workshop of the Wiener Symphoniker. Furthermore, he studied orchestration with composer and professor Richard Dünser at the Arts University Graz. Later he attended a historic conducting course at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Italy, where he met his mentor Maestro Daniele Gatti.
Lee completed (2022) the "Beethoven Symphonies and Piano Concertos cycle" with top-notch pianists and the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul at the Seoul Arts Center, and recently he made his opera debut in Europe at the Siena International Music Festival with Rossini's "Il figlio per azzardo" (regia: Lorenzo Mariani) at the Teatro comunale dei Rinnovati. He has been nominated for several prominent conducting competitions such as Besançon, Malko and Rachmaninoff Competitions and conducted the Wiener Symphoniker, the Prague Philharmonia, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and many others.
His recordings include Beethoven Symphony No. 3 and Mozart Symphony No. 29 with the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul.[3][4]
Orchestral Ensemble Seoul
In 2014, some graduates of the Seoul National University founded an alumni chamber orchestra which initially was intended for a small number of concerts yearly on a part-time basis. They appointed Lee as their first music director. He grew the orchestra rapidly and mainstreamed the orchestra into the Korean classical music scene. He debuted the orchestra at the Seoul Arts Center and has consistently invited soloists of international repute such as Bomsori Kim, Yeol Eum Son, to name a few.[5] After changing its name to the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul (OES) in 2016, Lee and the OES have achieved many significant milestones like the complete Beethoven Symphonies and Piano Concertos at the Seoul Arts Center. Now the orchestra is on a Schumann cycle. In 2020, the orchestra became a governmental arts organization designated by the Seoul City, and has attracted attention not only on the Korean stages but also on Far-Eastern stages.
