Ariane Cap is an American-Austrian bassist, educator, author[1] and composer who plays a variety of musical styles.[2] She has toured throughout Europe, Brazil and the US as a sideman with bands like Tempest, “The Mozartband” (classical funk), “The Sippy Cups” (rock) and "Generation Esmeralda" (Latin disco), as well as her own solo bass and duo projects.[3][4]

Early life[edit]

Ariane was born in Innsbruck, Austria. She started playing the piano and recorder at the age of five and entered the Conservatory of Innsbruck at 6, studying the piano and flute. At 18, she played with local bands while obtaining her Master of Science’s degree at the University of Innsbruck. Upon graduation in 1996, she returned to University to study electric and upright basses and entered the Academy of Music in Vienna to study Jazz Bass and Bass Education. In 1998, she studied at the University of Miami after being granted a scholarship from the Academy of Music of Vienna in Austria. She received a Graduate Certificate of Music at the University of South Florida in Tampa after completing a Teaching Assistantship there.[5][6] Since 1998, Ariane Cap has been living in the USA.[7]

Musical career[edit]

Ariane has played all over Europe and the US with a range of bands and musicians in different styles including rock, Mozart, and funk music with ‘’The Mozartband’’[8] and also toured with ‘’The Sippy Cups’’, a rock circus aimed at kids. She also toured and recorded with the Palmwine Boys and was part of Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna, loosely based on The Tempest by Shakespeare.[3] As a sideman, she also supported a guitar virtuoso Muriel Anderson. She has collaborated on projects with producer Keith Olsen, and recorded with James Jae-E Earley, a former producer for the One Voice (girl group). In 2019 she toured Brazil with rock bassist Stu Hamm as the duo “Bass Beyond

Borders”. Since 2012, she has ben co-leading the project OoN - The Bass and Bassoon Duo of Ariane Cap and Paul Hanson with jazz bassonist Paul Hanson.[9][10][11][12]

In 2017, Ariane released her CD called Cello Suite #1 in G by J.S. Bach Played on Electric Bass under her own label.[13][14][15] She has created compositions for online games with Somatone, Karney Music and Sound, and Wolftrack audio. In 2014 Ariane was awarded an “Artistry in Residence” award by the Ucross Foundation.[16] She has been featured in several Bass magazines and was nominated one of four winners of the “Hottest Bass Players on the scene”.[17]

Tempest[edit]

Between 2004 and 2007 Ariane toured with Tempest, an American Celtic rock band from Northern California.[18][19] The band fuses Celtic music with other influences such as American and European folk, and progressive rock.[20] While Ariane was with Tempest, they released their digital album and CD, Double Cross, with Ariane on bass and harmony vocals.[21][22]

Teaching[edit]

Ariane is a certified TinyHabits™ coach and NLP master practitioner and trainer.[23] Ariane shares her learning techniques online as well as in person at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkley.[24] She also holds teaching seminars and clinics nationally and internationally.[5][25]

In 2009 Ariane founded community based music school, which connected music teachers to children who want to learn to play a variety of instruments.[26] She has also assisted with Victor Wooten’s and Steve Bailey’s Bass Nature Camps and facilitates regular jazz camps to inspire women to play jazz.[27][24] She regularly publishes educational content online and has an ongoing column on No Treble called Talking Technique.[28][29][30] Ariane has written and self-published a book on musical theory for bass players. She received an honorable mention for it from the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association (BAIPA).[31][32][33] Ariane is an elected Governor on the San Francisco Chapter Board of the Recording Academy and previously co-chaired the education committee.[34] She also co-runs Solo Bass Night, a series celebrating the art of solo bass.[35] Ariane is also an online educator with a course based on her published book.[23][32][33]She is also published with “TrueFire” and contributes regularly to online music magazines and her own music blog [5][6][36][37][38]
