Gyula Mesterházy (Hungarian: [ˈmɛʃtɛrhaːzi ˈɟulɐ]; born in Szombathely on 13 January 1974) is a Hungarian actor and holder of the Imre Soós Award (2005).
Biography[edit]
Early life[edit]
Gyula Mesterházy was born in Szombathely, Hungary and grew up at the nearby spa town, Bük close to the border with Austria. As a child Mesterházy participated in both team and individual sports (football, athletics and swimming) and at the age of seven started dancing in a local Hungarian folk dance group. Here his talents were immediately noticed, and he became one of the star soloists of the group. After working in Bük for several years in 1997 at the age of 23 Mesterházy moved to Hungary's capital, Budapest, where a professional photographer persuaded him to take part in a fashion shoot. These were to be the first steps towards a career in the performing arts.[1]
Career as theatre and film actor[edit]
Mesterházy has appeared on stage, on film and in commercials both in Hungary and internationally. He studied to be an actor first at the renowned Margit Földessy Acting and Drama Studio in Budapest, then continued at the József Attila Theatre Actor and Drama Academy, where during his studies Mesterházy acted in various plays at the theatre itself. After completing his studies Mesterházy was selected by the Győr National Theatre in Hungary, where he became a full-time member of the theatre company. In Győr at the largest theatre in western Hungary Meterházy soon gained leading roles in several plays.[1] He fast became an audience favourite in roles such as Romeo in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet,[2], as Fyedka in the musical, Fiddler on the Roof[3] and as Rodolpho in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge[4].
Such was Mesterházy's success that in 2005 he was awarded the Imre Soós Award, which each year is presented to a young actor (who graduated in acting no more than 5 years earlier) for exceptional artistic performance. A year later in 2006 he was asked to join the Budapest Chamber Theatre, one of the most well-renowned theatres in Budapest.[1] Here he took on many roles: he played among others Garett Thibodeau in Stephen King's Dolores[5], Claude Pichon in Neil Simon's The Dinner Party[6] and the Priest in Ryūnosuke Akutagawa-Müller's Rashomon[7]. During this period Mesterházy also played at other theatres including in the role of Márió in Dario Niccodemi's L'alba, Il giorno, e la notte (Morning, noon and night)[8]. After his time at the Budapest Chamber Theatre Mesterházy continued to act in touring theatre, where, for example, he played the role of Lewis in Barry Creyton's Valentine's Day, which he also directed.[9]
From his early acting years he also took roles in film and on TV, both in Hungarian and in international productions.[1] He has appeared regularly in Jóban Rosszban (For Better or Worse) since 2006[10] as well as in other TV series such as Válótársak (Divorce Buddies)[11], Drága örökösök (Precious Heirs)[12], Keresztanyu (Godmother)[13] and A mi kis falunk (Our Little Village)[14]. Internationally he has played roles in TV series such as the Iranian-French co-production, Zero Degrees Turn (2007) with the actor Shahab Hosseini[15], the UK productions, Fleming (2013)[16] and Maigret (2016)[17], and the US productions Houdini (2013) with Adrien Brody[18], Homeland (2018) with Claire Danes[19] and Hunters (2020)[20]. In films he has played roles such as a Nazi official in Adolf Eichmann (UK 2007)[21], the Canadian Ambassador in The Spy Who Dumped Me (USA 2018)[22] and Fyodor in Dhaakad (India 2022) with Kangana Ranaut[23].
Other performance work[edit]
Mesterházy has also appeared in more than 40 commercials as a screen actor (for companies such as Coca-Cola, Schlossgold, Raiffeisen Bank, Renault, Volkswagen and Heidelberg[24]) and in photographic shoots (in the late 1990s in his work as a model he became the European face of Playboy Jeans). Alongside his acting Mesterházy also works in dubbing and in narration (films and TV series in Hungarian). The Hungarian Internet Dubbing Database links him to more than 350 films[25]. His other work also includes appearances in music videos such as Get Ready to Bounce by Brooklyn Bounce[26].
Organiser, producer and presenter[edit]
During the 2010's variously as organiser, producer and presenter Mesterházy worked in the production of several classical music and cultural events[1] including as the presenter of a TV documentary about Pécs as European Capital of Culture 2010[27]. This programme drew on Plácido Domingo's Operalia competition, which in 2009 was organised in Pécs.[1]
Mesterházy was a founder and Managing Director of GuliAnd[28], which operated in both the UK and Hungary, and of PD CLASSICS[29]. He worked on the production team for a number of cultural events in both countries.[1] In the UK he was a co-producer of The Liverpool Opera – Four Seasons[30]; and in Hungary productions included The Voices![31] concerts, which each year presented young opera stars including those from the Operalia competition. In each of the three years from 2017 - in addition to many smaller concerts - Mesterházy co-produced a major production for PD CLASSICS:
- 2017: opera in Pécs, Verdi's La traviata with internationally renowned opera singers such as Marina Rebeka [32]. The lead baritone role was played by Plácido Domingo in his first major stage appearance in Hungary for 30 years.
- 2018: concert in Pécs by the Grammy Award and Oscar winning Gustavo Santaolalla[33].
- 2019: concert in Szeged with Plácido Domingo to celebrate the opening of the Saint Gellért Forum[34]
Education[edit]
Mesterházy studied as an actor at the Margit Földessy Acting and Drama Studio in Budapest (1999), then at the József Attila Theatre Actor and Drama Academy (2001). After completing his acting studies Mesterházy obtained a degree in Communications & Media, majoring in television sciences, from Kodolányi János University (2004). In 2013 Mesterházy developed his acting techniques further at the Method Acting Method College School in London[35]. Most recently at Károli Gáspár University Mesterházy obtained a further degree qualification as Manager in Artistic Administration (2021).[1]
