HBCU Sports is a digital media property that provides sports information, news, and opinion on Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).[1][2] The media was started in 1997 by Kenn Rashad, HBCU Sports and gained attention for breaking news in the HBCU space. HBCU Sports broke news that NFL Hall of Fame Deion Sanders would be named the new head football coach at Jackson State University.[3][4]

HBCU Sports is located in the Dallas, Texas.[5] It is owned by Rashad Media and distributes content on hbcusports.com and other company-branded social media platforms.[1]

History[edit]

HBCU Sports began in 1997 as The SWAC Page. At the time, it was a sports information website that covered the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).[6] In 2007, the company expanded its coverage to include more HBCU athletic programs when it was renamed TSPN Sports (tspnsports.com).[7][8] While operating as TSPN Sports, the website’s fan forum was named as one of the five must-visit sites for HBCU marching band fans.[9] The company expanded to cover all Historically Black Colleges and University athletic programs and in 2014, it was renamed HBCU Sports.[10][11]

Band of the Year Award[edit]

In 2015, HBCU Sports introduced the HBCU Sports Band of the Year Award. The winner of the award is determined by the website’s visitors who vote for the band of their choice from a list of finalists selected by the publication.
