HIMEL Maschinen GmbH & Co. KG has its story dating back to 1954 when a trained agricultural machinery mechanic Mathias Hirlinger develops the first cutting blower in his parents' garage with Swabian tinkerers and craftsmanship.

“Because my father was too lazy to carry the hay upstairs in the barn, he developed the first cutting fan back then”, explains Werner Hirlinger, the current Managing Director of Himel Maschinen GmbH & Co. KG.[10] After graduation with the master craftsman's diploma Mathias Hirlinger has founded Himel Maschinen GmbH & Co. KG. Shortly after that he has invented the grain blower. [11]

In 1970s HIMEL Machinen introduced their new malt mill and screw conveyors, the hay lift, the silo lift, and the round bale lift. One of the latest inventions of those period became the grain crusher.

In the mid-80s Werner Hirlinger, the eldest son, joins his father's side. One of the first patents is the HIMEL blower series LBG with direct drive. The hay blower became the first HIMEL European patent. [12] A few days after the fall of the Wall, HIMEL makes its first contact with the eastern countries. Soon new HIMEL sales structures were created in the new countries as well as in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Baltic States, Slovenia, Hungary and Russia.

At the end of the 90s, the youngest brother Martin Hirlinger takes over responsibility in the inner resort of the family business. Werner Hirlinger becomes managing director of the HIMEL Maschinen GmbH & Co. KG.

In 2004 it was a 50 years anniversary of HIMEL machines. On this occasion the Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, Erwin Teufel, paid tribute to the innovative performance of the company. He places Mathias Hirlinger in the great tradition of the country's tinkerers and thinkers. A short time later he is awarded with the "Golden Master's Certificate". In the same year, the company acquired a stake in one of the largest manufacturers of cleaning machines and grain systems, Petkus Technologie GmbH in Eisenach-Wutha.[13]

Due to HIMEL’s wide range of services it has cooperated with the European experimental farm and federal research institute for animal health "Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut" for the construction of barn equipment on the island of Reims.[14]

Since 2010 HIMEL has run development of a fully automatic straw pellet system and building a further "renewable energies from straw" mainstay: straw pellets as fuel or for bedding. After a long planning phase, an additional new hall is built at the company's headquarters in Melchingen. A spacious modern complex is therefore being built on around 1170 square meters.[15]

Pellet presses and straw mills are built intomobile containers and produce pellets for energy generation fully automatically. HIMEL was the first to provide installation of pellet mills in Uzbekistan (Asia) and Tunisia (North Africa).
