HMS Wasp was a Bramble-class gunboat of the British Royal Navy.[1][2] She was laid down on 10 August 1885, and launched on 13 September 1886. Wasp was completed later that year.[1]
Design and description
HMS Wasp had a length of 165 feet, a beam of 28 feet, and a draft of about 10.7 feet.[1]
Service history
On 10 September 1887, HMS Wasp departed Singapore in British Malaya bound for Shanghai in China and, at the time, the colony of British Hong Kong. Aboard were a crew of 73 made up of 7 officers, 55 enlisted men, 3 boy seamen from the Royal Navy, and 8 Royal Marines; also aboard were 7 passengers, made up of 1 officer and 6 men, bringing the total aboard to 80.
HMS Wasp would take until the 16–17 of September 1887 to arrive in Hong Kong, with the ship running at its 10-knot cruise speed, as the distance between Singapore and Hong Kong was 1,680 miles, but for reasons unknown, she never arrived.
Her loss is suspected to have been the result of the ship encountering a typhoon and foundering with all hands lost.
