HTTP 555
The HTTP response status code 555 A feature, not a bug[1] is a server-side error produced intentionally as a precaution by SaaS vendors. The 555 error has been used randomly through the normal operation of the service. When a real problem causes an issue, the vendor can turn off 555 errors, and the users will feel that the issue was quickly resolved.
Overview
In today's world, SaaS vendors have started realizing that great code doesn't necessarily reward great appreciation. In fact, people will simply ignore a perfect and seamless service similar to the way they ignore unflawed air-breathing unless some issues are introduced. Furthermore, when an issue arrives, it would be greatly appreciated if it would be resolved in a timely manner.
HTTP 555 was introduced in order to supply the required user attention for conscious recognition, as well as allow the vendor to [2] when an unexpected service issue arises, such as bugs, regressions, etc...
History
Introducing defects in one's own product was introduced in 1932, called Planned obsolescence. The most famous cases are light bulbs and smartphones. The SaaS business model[3] is based on subscription rather than ownership, it needed to devise a different approach. An early concept of HTTP 555 was shared on Twitter[4] in 2022.
