HUD is an online dating application. It launched in October 2015 and by February 2016, it was one of the top 10 most downloaded apps in the Lifestyle category in the US app store. It is accessible through a web browser or a mobile application.[1]
Overview
History
HUD, which originally stood for ‘Hook Up Dating,’ was founded and launched in October 2015 by Edward Chen. It is a commitment-free, casual dating application[2] that has more than 7 million users, as of May 2020 media reports.[3][4]
In 2018, the creator of the application ran a campaign using traditional method of advertising on 100 billboards in Los Angeles.[5][6]
Operation
The application allows the user to sign up and find matches. It is known for providing short-term, casual yet safe hookups with an easy user experience.[7] In July 2018, it launched female-friendly features such as chat requests, profile-blocking, photo requests and photo protection blur.[3][8] In June 2019, HUD app partnered with SAFE app that allows users to post their verified STD results on the HUD profile page.[9][10]
In June 2020 during the COVID-19 crisis, the company launched a video chat request with auto-blur safety feature on the application. The video chat is available to a pair already matched on the application, and can take place only if the users have exchanged a message. Auto-blur starts when the video call initiates and can be turned off with the consent of both the users.[11][12]
