Habib Rahman is a British politician who became the Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2021. He has been a Labour Councillor for Elswick Ward since being first elected in 2010.[1][2]
Early life and career[edit]
Rahman was born in Bangladesh to Bengali Muslim parents from Balaganj, Sylhet, and moved to the United Kingdom in 1977 at the age of 12, unable to speak any english, His father Azizur Rahman had moved to the city of Newcastle in search of a better life, but was killed just 10 days later, stabbed in the Wallsend restaurant where he worked by a white customer who was unhappy about the size of a takeaway curry...[2]
Rahman was elected as a Labour Councillor for Elswick ward in 2010 and re-elected in 2014 and 2018. He is part of the leadership of Newcastle City Council, and as a city councillor, he became Newcastle’s first Black, Asian, minority ethnic (BAME) cabinet member in 2018 and then Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor in 2019.[1]
Before becoming a Councillor, Rahman had a background of working as a Youth Worker[3], and has said his childhood experiences of "brutal racism" had made him determined to defeat the evils of discrimination.
Lord Mayor of Newcastle[edit]
In May 2021, Rahman aged 47 was appointed to become The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, making him Newcastle's first ever non-white Lord Mayor in top job's 800-year history. At his appointment Ceromony he stated "This is a safe, tolerant city now thanks to the work that has been done from institutions and individuals. Perhaps some of that started from the death of my father."[2][4]
The father-of-three said his appointment was "history in the making" and it "sets a challenge for us now to make sure our city remains free and open to people of all faiths, colour, ethnicity, and gender".[2]
The charities the Lord Mayor is supporting the charity Show Racism the Red Card which he has been involved with as youth worker in the City back in 1998 , Rohingya Action North East and the Monu Dorji Foundation.[5][3]
