Hack The Box is a United Kingdom international company focused on training individuals and businesses around cybersecurity, penetration testing, and bug bounty hunting through gamification[1] and educational technology.[2] The company, in general, follows a freemium model for its services.[3]

The company has developed beginner and advanced cybersecurity courses, simulated penetration testing labs operating on virtual machines, a CTF platform, and offers information security certifications.[4]

The company was founded in 2017 by Haris Pylarinos, Aris Zikopoulos, and James Hooker.[5][6][7]

History[edit]

Hack The Box started as a cybersecurity community for knowledge sharing between members. The community members could test their skills through virtual hacking labs that were developed by the founding team and advanced cybersecurity individuals that were members of the platform.[8] When Hack The Box became an official entity, the company hired several community contributors.

Funding[edit]

The company has received a total funding of $69.5 million, from 3 lead investors.[9][10]

Parrot Security[edit]

Parrot OS[edit]

In 2020, Parrot OS and Hack The Box announced an official partnership. Hack The Box onboarded most of the Parrot team as a way to support the open-source project.[11]

"We agreed to collaborate with Parrot by onboarding a big part of the team now - aiming to onboard more gradually - and commit to investing in the project’s success." - Hack The Box announcement [12]

Pwnbox[edit]

Utilizing Parrot OS, the co-founder and CEO Haris Pylarinos created Pwnbox,[13] A web-browser-based virtual hacking Linux distribution offering the opportunity to Hack The Box users to practice their skills directly from their browsers without the need to set up an offline hacking environment on their personal computers.[14]
