Hackers Day is a 2017 Crime fiction thriller novel by Nigerian author Ugonna Utulor. The book was released on January 5, 2017 by OkadaBooks in Nigeria and January 9 by Smashwords, Inc. in the United States.[1] Though the book is still in e-book format, the hardcover format is set to be released soon. The author has reportedly said that he is in talks with several publishers to get the book published, but has not denied the possibility of accepting a contract from a traditional publishing house. Set in modern-day Nigeria, it tells the story of the biggest cyber attack in world financial history. The book has generated a high level of popularity in Nigeria. [2]
Plot
Nnamdi Smart Ibeto, an undergraduate Computer Science student at Obafemi Awolowo University, receives a call on his touchscreen Panasonic television on the early morning of August 25, 2016. It was an unexpected call. He was wanted by the police for questioning, he was told. But he denied being Nnamdi, saying the police might have called the wrong number. Deep within him, he knew so much had gone wrong.
In another development, the Central Bank of Nigeria was hacked, but the hacker could not be traced. $1 billion, equivalent to about 312 billion Naira at the time, was stolen from the Central Bank. It was the worst thing that could ever happen to a country in economic recession.
From somewhere in Mumbai, India, a man claimed to know who the Central Bank hacker was. This was surprising because he knew about the hacking before the Nigerian police. He gave Nnamdi Smart Ibeto's private number to the head of the Nigerian police's financial crimes unit, a high-ranking detective named Richard Mortal. He claimed to know everything about the hacker and how he could be arrested. However, he asked for twenty million Naira before he would divulge any information.
By this time, the news was in all global outlets. It made big news and threw the world into confusion and a standstill. The Federal Government of Nigeria called an immediate emergency meeting. The police had to arrest the hacker, they concluded.
Richard Mortal answered a call from the hacker based in India. He paid the money the hacker requested and received the IP address and location coordinates of the Central Bank's hacker. He and his partner, Chidinma, returned to their headquarters.
The first disappointment came when the hacker's IP address led to a personal computer belonging to the director of MI6 in London. A threat from the director sent shivers down the inspector's spine, ultimately ending the IP address tracking.
A helicopter and numerous ammunitions were arranged to arrest the hacker at his base in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. In Ile-Ife, a huge drama unfolded. A car chase ensued. Several people were hit. Roads were blocked. Another helicopter joined them.
The police chased the hacker, Nnamdi, and his girlfriend, Christie, to Lagos. The question remained whether the Nigerian Police and their allied forces could arrest the best hacker in the world.
The story introduces Spectra, an artificial intelligence machine that listens to, records, videos, and livestreams all activities around the world. There is also Antcam, another AI, and a special solar-powered Tesla Motors sports car exclusively owned by Nnamdi, which changes color every thirty minutes and plate number every forty-five minutes.
The day ended with strangers falling in love and the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, declaring August 25 as an annual Hackers Day, a public holiday, in memory of what happened in Nigeria.
