Haelrahv is a cross-genre multi-user dungeon game developed by Rich Mondy in association with the Role-Players Gaming Network (RPGN).

History[edit]

Rich Mondy had previously worked as a developer for Simutronics on their Modus Operandi title. Upon his departure, he endeavored to begin work on a new game and conceived of a new setting that mixed elements of fantasy with science fiction. Development began in 2001, with an alpha version of the game being available to the public shortly thereafter.

Setting[edit]

Haelrahv takes place on an imagined alien world of the same name. While Earth exists in lore and humans do exist on Haelrahv, those humans have arrived by chance and are long separated from any connection to Earth. Haelrahv has many differences from Earth, including a longer year (called an age) and eight distinct seasons. The game world is comprised of over 13,000 distinct "rooms".

Gameplay[edit]

Races[edit]

There are five playable species (referred to as 'races').

Alteri are an inquisitive and creative people, well suited to many professions. They are naturally stealthy and agile, as well as naturally telepathic. They are poorly suited to tasks requiring significant endurance or strength.

Darju are a fierce, tribal people who arrived on Haelrahv after fleeing the wrath of their gods. They originate on the planet Vkeftku, though they have no modern connection to their home world. They possess many strengths and exceptional warriors, though they lack in diplomatic capability. Darju are sometimes mistaken to be 'cat people' due to their features which may include stripes on the skin and a mantle of hair upon the shoulders for males, but they have no connection to felines.

The Eolai are graceful and charismatic. Eolai have a great affinity for nature and view themselves as caretakers of all of Haelrahv's life. Though frequently viewed as arrogant, many have a sincere desire to protect what they may view as lesser races from themselves.

Humans arrived on Haelrahv after a pleasure cruise starship named the Blue Ray crashed on the planet. They are the most adaptable of all species, favoring no specific profession, nor lacking in ability to learn any.

The Jaddan are a physically imposing species that possess great strength and vitality. Not well known for their intellect, some of history's notable figures in the realm of magic and psionics have nonetheless come from this species. They are often of kind and compassionate temperament, though this is not always the case.

Professions[edit]

There are twelve playable professions (classes) available. Multi-classing is not supported.

Agents are masters of stealth and subterfuge. Their talents include assassination, expertise with poisons and ability to bypass security systems ranging from electronic to a simple lock.

Artisans are the premier crafting profession. Although crafting systems are generally open to all characters, Artisans excel in creating, modifying and repairing many items.

Bureaucrats are a mixture of diplomats, merchants, lawyers and politicians. They represent an overall political everyman outside of typical hack-and-slash archetypes.

Guardians are an order of protectors that value harmony and peace, even through violent means when necessary. They are the supreme warriors in terms of unarmed combat. Guardians make use of meditations and auras to enhance their natural abilities. Guardians forego the use of weapons or armor.

Mages, as the name would imply, are those who have dedicated themselves to the art of magic. Mages will often dabble into other related arts, including alchemy.

Medics use technology to heal others, including administration of antidotes, external and internal injuries, nervous system damage and even reviving a character that has died.

Mercenaries possess overall offensive combat ability surpassing all others in pure damage output. Mercenaries are trained in the use of virtually any weapon.

Performers resemble a typical fantasy bard archetype, able to create many magical effects by use of musical instruments and their voice.

Psionics harness the power of the mind to perform feats ranging from telepathy to telekinesis. Additionally, they tap into the spirit world and can conjure spirits from it to serve their bidding.

Technicians are experts in technology. They are able to create and repair many electronic devices, including droids to assist them as needed.

Trackers resemble a 'ranger' archetype, able to traverse wilderness conditions and possessing great hunting capabilities. They are resourceful, able to make use of what nature provides for their survival.

Troopers are heavily armored soldiers with the training and resources of a professional army at their call. In addition to their excellent skill with an array of arms and armors, they are also able to make use of transport craft for emergency extractions or for general movement between locations.
