Hafsat Abdullahi, popularly known by her stage name Havfy, is a Nigerian performance poet, writer and youth advocate. She is a United Nations Young Leader for the Sustainable Development Goals for the 2025–2027 cohort and a Global Youth Leader for Education with the Global Partnership for Education. Her advocacy focuses on women and girls, education, youth empowerment, peace, mental health and social justice.[1]
Abdullahi has performed at national and international events and has collaborated with organizations including UNICEF, UNFPA, the World Bank, United Nations Security Council, USAID and TEDx.[1][2]
Early life
Abdullahi was born and raised in northern Nigeria. She has described growing up in an underrepresented community as an important influence on her poetry and advocacy.[2]
She has described being raised in an interreligious family, with a Muslim father and Christian mother, and said that her parents' approach to religious tolerance influenced her outlook.[3]
Abdullahi began writing at an early age. She initially wrote prose before becoming interested in poetry after reading poems in her elder sister's school textbooks.[4]
As a teenager, she began performing poetry at school events and subsequently represented her school outside her home state in poetry competitions.[4]
Poetry
Abdullahi performs under the name Havfy and is known for spoken word and performance poetry. Her work frequently addresses social issues, including gender inequality, injustice, education and the experiences of young people.[2]
She has said that she began using poetry to draw attention to social problems because she found the artistic form more effective in getting people to listen to issues that concerned her.[3]
Her early performances included school assemblies, graduation ceremonies and poetry competitions. She later became involved in the Nigerian spoken-word and poetry community, including events organized by the Abuja Literary Society.[3]
A performance of her poem "To the Girl in English Class" became an important part of her rise as a spoken-word performer. Academic research on Nigerian digital poetry has identified Havfy as a notable example of the use of social.
