Ruhamah Ifere is a Nigerian gender equality activist, community peacebuilder and youth advocate. She has worked on gender-based violence, women's rights, peacebuilding, youth participation and media literacy.[1]

Education

Ifere studied law at the National Open University of Nigeria, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2021.[2]

She subsequently developed a professional interest in policy advocacy, peacebuilding and social development.[1]

Activism

Ifere became involved in peacebuilding and youth advocacy while studying law. In 2021, she was selected as one of the participants in the Speak Up Stand Out (SUSO) project organised by the Network of Youth for Sustainable Development Goals and supported through the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs' VOICE programme.[3]

As part of the programme, she worked on advocacy against gender-based violence, particularly among young people in Lagos State. Her work included community mobilisation and awareness activities concerning sexual and gender-based violence.[3]

Ifere has also worked on women's rights and gender equality through public education and community-based advocacy. Her writing has addressed issues including female genital mutilation, women's participation in governance and the rights of women and girls.[4]

Youth and peacebuilding work

Ifere has been involved in youth-led peacebuilding initiatives. She has served in roles associated with the Youth, City of Peace Initiative in Lagos and has been a member of the Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network.[5]

She is a co-founder of The Youth Evolve, a youth-focused initiative concerned with peacebuilding and sustainable development.[1]

Through her work with youth and community organisations, she has promoted participation by young people in peacebuilding, civic engagement and sustainable development activities.[5]

Sexual and gender-based violence advocacy

Ifere founded the Sexual Offences Watch Observers (SOWO) Project as part of her work with the Speak Up Stand Out programme. The project sought to increase awareness of sexual and gender-based violence and encourage young people to report and speak out against sexual violence.[3]

According to Nigeria Youth SDGs, the project reached more than 5,000 young people through advocacy and awareness activities.[3]

She has continued to publish articles and participate in programmes addressing the rights of women and girls. Her work has included advocacy against female genital mutilation and campaigns concerning women's participation in political and civic processes.[4]

Media literacy and civic technology

Ifere is the founder of Trully Verify Africa, a Nigerian social enterprise focused on combating misinformation and information manipulation affecting young people.[6]

The organisation developed from Ifere's work as an election observer and her interest in the effect of misinformation on young people's participation in civic processes. Trully Verify Africa was incorporated in Nigeria in 2023 and focuses on digital literacy and civic engagement.[6]

In 2023, Trully Verify Africa placed second in a Code for Africa hackathon focused on combating misinformation.[6]

Recognition

In 2020, Ifere was recognised by GalaxyPeace as one of its Top 25 African Women in Peacebuilding.[7]

In 2021, she was selected as one of the activists participating in the Speak Up Stand Out project.[1]

In 2022, Impact Toolbox recognised Ifere as one of its community ambassadors for her work in peacebuilding, youth advocacy and gender equality.[5]
