Haley Mellin (born 29 October 1983), is an American artist focusing on sustainable evolution and nature conservation.

Early life

She grew up in San Anselmo, California. Her father worked as a publisher, and her mother worked as a Clinical Professor in Family Medicine at University of California, San Francisco. Mellin graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2003 majoring in art and minoring in education. She received a Haas Research Fellowship to study historic Egyptian Fayum Portraits[1] and a Strauss Grant for a large-scale Public Service Project. Mellin graduated the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in 2005.[2] She studied at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and received a Ph.D. in Visual Culture and Education with a dissertation on "The Aura of Art and Presence in the Digital Age" in 2012. She cites mentorship by South African teachers Rose Shakinovsky and Claire Gavronsky. Mellin received a Rhizome digital arts commission from the New Museum, New York in 2013.[3]

Land Conservation

Mellin founded Art into Acres, a nonprofit for permanent large-scale land conservation in 2017, linking the two as "both art and conservation are based in legacy."[4][5] The initiative focuses on biodiversity and indigenous justice, supporting the creation of 22,000,000 acres of new protected areas with the participation of artists and art institutions.[6] She is quoted as saying "collaboration is a central tenet to sustainability."[7] She co-founded Conserve in 2018.[8][9]

Sustainability and Art

Mellin co-founded the Environmental Council at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles[10] and Art and Climate Action[11] in 2020. Mellin supported the creation of Gallery Climate Coalition Los Angeles[12] in 2021. She co-founded Artists Commit, an artist environmental sustainability group,[13] in 2021. She co-founded Partners for Arts Climate Targets (PACT) in 2021.[14] In 2022, she received a Teiger Foundation grant to support the first carbon emissions calculations, drawdown and education for museum exhibitions, curators and artist studios.
