Handsontable is a JavaScript datagrid library with a spreadsheet user interface and features that is developed and supported by Handsoncode.[1][2] Since version 7.0.0, the library has been distributed as source-available software, with 6.2.2 being the final open source (MIT license) version.

Handsontable is not standalone software and therefore requires integration into a larger system, such as a CRM, ERP, or CMS, among others.[3][4]

    History[edit]

The idea to create a JavaScript datagrid with the functionality of a spreadsheet was arrived at by one of the founders of Handsoncode, Marcin Warpechowski,[5] in 2010. It came out of frustration from a lack of then-stable solutions allowing for the ability to edit JSON files in a browser. The first commit for the software was pushed to the Github repository on May 24, 2011,[6] and the first milestone of the repository was completed in version 0.1.0, being closed on May 16, 2012.[7]

In 2016, Handsontable was extended by additional features. This proprietary extension became known as Handsontable Pro. The features mentioned included column filters, nested headers, and formula support.

On March 6th, 2019, Handsontable merged its Community Edition and Pro versions and changed the name of the software to Handsontable.

    Technology used[edit]

Initially, Handsontable was written using jQuery, but that dependency was removed in 2014.[8] Currently, it follows the updates to the ECMA Script standard.

    Features[edit]

Handsontable contains fewer features than consumer software such as Google Sheets or Microsoft Office. It's core functionality, however, can be extended through custom plugins due to its modular design.[9][2] Handsontable includes, among others, the following options:[10][11][1]

    • Freezing rows and columns
    • Moving rows and columns
    • Resizing rows and columns
    • Sort data in a column
    • Context menu
    • Merging cells
    • Clipboard
    • Filtering data in a column
    • Column dropdown menu
    • Nested headers
    • Collapsing columns
    • Export to file
    • Formula support

    Framework support[edit]

Handsontable uses wrappers to support JavaScript frameworks. It currently supports the following frameworks:

    Browser compatibility[edit]

Handsontable is compatible with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Internet Explorer 9+, although there are some known issues with IE9.[10] It also supports Microsoft Edge and Opera 26+.[14]
