Harley Ronald Swanbury (14 November 1932 – 1999) was an Australian rules footballer who played 31 league games for Norwood Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) between 1958 and 1960. A ruck-rover and defender, he won Norwood's Best First Year Player in 1958, featured among the best players in the 1958 Advertiser Cup night-series victory, and was part of Norwood reserves premiership sides in 1960 and 1961. He later coached and played football in the Riverland before his death in 1999.

Early life

Swanbury was born in Waikerie, South Australia and raised in Moorook. At 15 years of age in 1947 he played in Moorook's senior premiership side.[1] He also appeared for Loxton before being recruited to Norwood.[1]

SANFL career

Swanbury joined Norwood in 1958 after strong trial form. He made his SANFL debut in Round 3, 1958, against West Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on 10 May 1958. Norwood lost the match 13.22 (100) to 10.9 (69), and the club's official match archive records this fixture as Swanbury's senior debut.[2]

That year he played 12 league games, was awarded Norwood's Best First Year Player, and featured in the Advertiser Cup Night Series. Norwood defeated South Adelaide 13.15 (93) to 12.15 (87) under lights at Norwood Oval, and Swanbury was listed among the team's best players alongside Haydn Bunton and Brian Sawley.[3]

In 1959 he added 13 league appearances and received a "services rendered" award.[1] In 1960 he played six senior matches and was part of Norwood's reserves premiership team, the club's first at that level for 21 years.[1]

His final senior appearance came in the 1960 SANFL Grand Final, when Norwood lost to North Adelaide by five points at Adelaide Oval. The result was North Adelaide 14.11 (95) defeating Norwood 13.12 (90).[4]

Swanbury also played in Norwood's 1961 reserves premiership, taking the ruck-rover role in the victory over West Torrens.[1] In total, he played 31 league matches and kicked five goals for Norwood, wearing guernsey numbers 31 and 11.[1]

Playing style

Swanbury was primarily a ruck-rover but was also used in defence. Club records described him as having "good hands" and a reliable kick.[1] He represented South Australia at reserves level.[1]

Riverland football

After the 1961 season, Swanbury returned to Moorook to assist with his family's fruit block. He spent two seasons as player-coach of the Waikerie Football Club before returning to Moorook, where he won four Best and Fairest awards and was runner-up several times.[1] He was a long-time participant in local sport, also playing tennis and bowls.[1]

Family and death

Swanbury died in 1999 at the age of 67. His death is recorded in South Australian obituary indexes, including the Ryerson Index and the State Library of South Australia.[5][6]

His nephew, Paul Swanbury, later played 10 senior matches for Norwood in 1987.[1]

Legacy

Swanbury's career is documented in the Redlegs Museum, Norwood's official archive, and he was featured as a "Past Player of the Week" in 2025.[7] He is remembered for his contribution to Norwood in the late 1950s and for his long involvement in Riverland football.
