Harmandar Singh
Harmandar Singh s/o Naranjan Singh (Punjabi (ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ) born 3 October 1957) is a Malaysian copywriter, newspaper columnist, publisher, humanitarian, anti-corruption activist, and academic.
Early life
Born in the iron mining town of Bukit Besi in Dungun, Terengganu, he did his primary schooling in Dungun. He later moved to Kuala Lumpur and started his career in advertising.
Career
After a stint as a pub guitarist, he created over 400 TV commercials and earned hundreds of awards early in his career. He has worked as a creative lead at ad agency McCann Erickson in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, London, New York, Tokyo, and Manila.
For 11 years, he was a weekly columnist [1] with The Star and New Sunday Times writing about advertising and marketing-related issues. Ham is a pioneering publisher of advertising trade magazines and titles in the region for over 25 years in Malaysia, Singapore and Jakarta.
He has his own magazine called MARKETING.
He founded ad industry events like the MC2 Awards, Malaysian Media Conference, Malaysian CMO Conference & Awards, Best of Global Digital Marketing, APPIES Malaysia and Adrenaline Student Awards.
In 2009, he created and hosted the Youth Engagement Summit (YES), inspired by Obama’s victory on the theme of Change and included Donald Trump, Twitter Founder Biz Stone, Facebook's Randi Zuckerberg and Bob Geldof.
Ham served as an ExCo Member for MERCY Malaysia from 2014-2020 and led humanitarian missions during Nepal earthquake in 2015 and Syrian refugee camps in the Beqaa Valley in 2016. He still serves as Trustee of MERCY Malaysia UK.
Honours, decorations, awards and distinctions
From April 2019 to March 2020, Ham served as an External Advisor on Branding & Communications to the Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Communications & Multimedia, Malaysia.
In 2021, he was appointed as a Central Team member of Malaysia’s anti-corruption cause Rasuah Busters. He is responsible for developing the "Mak Kata Jangan"[2] anti-corruption video campaign that is one of the pillars of Rasuah Busters. Harmandar Singh, in his capacity as Adjunct Professor, collaborated on the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Social Communications for Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris UPSI. He is now Adjunct Professor at Taylor’s University.
Harmandar Singh was given the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents (4As) Malaysia inaugural Chairman’s Award in 2005. He is also the Official Malaysia Country representative of the Cannes International Advertising Festival and was inducted into the International Advertising Association Malaysia Hall of Fame in 2018.
